Cybernews researchers discovered that Lena, designed to assist customers on Lenovo’s website, could be tricked into sharing sensitive information by utilizing complex prompts. In a remarkable breach of security, the researchers were able to obtain active session cookies from human customer support agents. This effectively allowed them to take over the agents’ accounts and access potentially sensitive data, jeopardizing the integrity of Lenovo’s internal network.

The researchers emphasized that while their approach resulted in the theft of session cookies, the possibilities for malicious use extend well beyond that, including potential internal system command executions, which could lead to the installation of backdoors and lateral movement across the corporate network.

Unpacking the Security Flaw

The crux of the issue lies in the lack of appropriate safeguards and restrictions embedded in AI chatbots. Researchers pointed out several critical security oversights:

  1. Improper User Input Sanitization: The chatbot failed to properly filter and sanitize user inputs, allowing harmful commands to be executed.

  2. Inadequate Chatbot Output Sanitization: Lena was unable to verify or filter the content it produced, which is crucial for preventing harmful instructions from being relayed.

  3. Web Server Vulnerabilities: The server did not verify the credibility of the commands issued by the chatbot, leaving the door open for exploitation.

These oversights create a fertile ground for Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks, as malicious actors can leverage unsuspecting interfaces to gain unauthorized access to important data.
