For the first time, data gleaned from an online survey of nearly 100,000 people across 48 markets indicates that more Americans are sourcing their news from social and video networks than from conventional television and news websites. This shift became particularly pronounced during the week following the January 2025 U.S. presidential inauguration, highlighting that a notable portion of the population is turning away from established news sources.

What does this mean? For younger Americans, the trends are even more pronounced. More than half of those under 35 now rely on social media and video platforms as their primary news sources. Among respondents aged 18 to 24, this figure rises to 44%. Such statistics underscore a generational divergence in news consumption habits that is reshaping the media landscape.

According to Nic Newman, a senior research associate at the Reuters Institute, these creators are successfully reaching audiences that traditional media often overlooks. Many of their followers tend to be young men, often leaning right in their political views and expressing low trust in mainstream media that they perceive as biased or part of a "liberal elite." This shift raises questions about the trustworthiness and impartiality of the information being distributed by these popular figures.

Despite gaining traction and influence, it’s essential to approach news from these online personalities with caution. The report also indicates that they are frequently seen as significant sources of misinformation. In the U.S., politicians rank as the top purveyors of misleading information, closely followed by online influencers. Another noteworthy trend is the growing reliance on AI for news consumption, especially among younger demographics. The report revealed that 15% of respondents under 25 turn to AI chatbots for news weekly, compared to only 7% of the overall population. Services like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta AI are increasingly becoming fixtures in how people access information, further eroding the once-vibrant role of traditional news outlets.

Preferences in News Consumption Format

While text remains the predominant form for consuming news globally, there’s a distinct shift toward audiovisual formats—especially among younger audiences. About 33% of people now prefer watching news online, and 15% prefer listening. This trend is particularly pronounced on social media networks, with platforms like X (formerly Twitter) gaining traction as popular news sources, especially among right-leaning users and young men.
