Celebrating Three Years of ChatGPT: A Turning Point for AI and Economy

Hi all,

Today marks a significant milestone in the world of artificial intelligence—ChatGPT launched exactly three years ago. In this brief period, access to “good enough” intelligence has surged exponentially, reshaping various sectors and prompting discussions about the future of work and technology.

Having spent a decade analyzing the implications of our so-called exponential age (including a book I published in 2021), it’s fascinating to observe how these last three years have signaled a pivotal shift. Here, we find ourselves at a remarkable intersection of overlapping S-curves in both AI models and chips, alongside a noticeable gap between rapidly advancing technology and linear-thinking institutions.

The Inflection Point of AI

As I delve into this topic, I’m thrilled to announce a four-part series detailing my current perspective on AI as a general-purpose technology at an inflection point. This series examines how AI is poised to reshape firms, markets, and the broader economy, covering key themes such as:

  • 🔮 Ten Things I’m Thinking About AI (Part 1)
  • 🔮 Ten Things I’m Thinking About AI | Part 2
  • 🔮 Ten Things I’m Thinking About AI | Part 3

Stay tuned for Part 4, landing in your inbox today right after the Sunday edition!

The Productivity Revolution

A recent study by Anthropic suggested that even if advancements in AI were to stall today, existing tools could still boost U.S. labor productivity by about 1.8% annually for the next decade. This figure is particularly striking when compared to historical productivity increases seen in the post-war boom or the dot-com era. I resonate with this view, especially since the release of GPT-4, given its powerful applications across various sectors.

However, tapping into these productivity gains is no easy feat. Companies must undertake extensive, people-centric transformation processes to fully leverage these advanced tools, which can be a time-consuming endeavor.

Moreover, while Anthropic’s projection aligns with the expectations of various economists, we are yet to witness tangible results. The recent U.S. productivity growth hovers around 1.5%, which is just about the historical average.

The Hidden Impact of AI

While AI’s apparent use is largely concentrated in tech hubs and roles like software development, there exists a vast reservoir of “submerged” AI exposure across sectors such as administration, finance, and professional services. This hidden impact constitutes 11.7% of U.S. wage value, indicating a potential for growth five times higher than what’s currently visible in the traditional tech sector. Research like MIT’s Project Iceberg delves deep into this subject, shedding light on the extensive—but less visible—effects of AI on the workforce. This suggests that the most significant transformations could emerge outside conventional tech centers.

What Lies Ahead?

At this stage, the impact of AI remains somewhat obscured in broad statistics, and it will be essential that these gains become evident by 2026.

Additionally, current readings suggest that we are not witnessing a bubble yet. Revenue in the application layer is strengthening, though concerns about funding quality continue to surface.

Key Players in Focus

Three significant developments to watch this week include:

  • Nvidia has issued a detailed memo to analysts, methodically countering bear cases concerning circular financing and potential accounting irregularities, which came across as slightly desperate but revealed the stakes involved in the AI race.

As we celebrate three years of ChatGPT, it’s clear that we are at a critical juncture. The next few years will determine how companies adapt and capitalize on AI’s capabilities amidst a rapidly evolving landscape. I invite you to join me as we explore these themes further in the forthcoming series.

Stay tuned for insights and analyses on the ever-evolving world of AI!
