Rethinking AI: Perspectives from the NABJ Convention and Everyday Life in Cleveland

Embracing AI: Insights from the NABJ Convention

I recently attended the 50th anniversary of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Given the gathering’s significance, I anticipated vibrant discussions about artificial intelligence (AI). What I found, however, was a prevailing sentiment of caution and fear. Over two days, I was struck by a common refrain among my fellow journalists: “We must protect ourselves.” The atmosphere was charged with anxiety about AI being a looming threat, potentially replacing our roles in the industry.

However, a transformative breakfast conversation at my hotel restaurant, Betts, shifted my perspective entirely.

A Conversation with Kevin

As my waiter, Kevin Knestrick, and I chatted, I steeled myself for what I expected would be anti-AI rhetoric. To my surprise, Kevin shared a different view. Initially, he hesitated, saying he didn’t really use AI. But then he recalled how it had transformed a recent project: when updating the restaurant’s menu, he used ChatGPT to generate text and streamline communication with his colleague. “It saved me so much time,” he admitted, illuminating a more pragmatic approach to AI.

Following Kevin, I met his colleagues Jamie Sargent and Dawud Hamzah, both younger professionals who utilized AI in their everyday lives. Their experiences were strikingly distinct from the fear echoed throughout the convention halls.

The Power Users: A New Perspective on AI

For Dawud, a bartender and youth motivational speaker, ChatGPT has replaced Google. He described using it for everything from crafting PowerPoint presentations for his speaking engagements to planning personal events. When tasked with organizing a relaxing, vegan-friendly birthday outing for his partner, he received an impressive itinerary in minutes. Even when faced with health issues, he turned to AI for tailored workout advice that proved effective.

Jamie, a former special education teacher, echoed similar sentiments. Since the inception of ChatGPT, he has successfully used it to create lesson plans, drastically reducing the time he spent preparing. “It’s not cheating; it’s just faster,” he remarked, underscoring a practical acceptance of AI’s capabilities. He utilizes AI to streamline complex travel plans, enabling him to focus more on enriching experiences with his students and family.

The Cautious Converts

Kevin’s perspective revealed a thoughtful engagement with technology. Initially hesitant, his positive experience compelled him to explore AI further, driven by a desire not to be left behind in a rapidly changing landscape. “How do we not be the little guy anymore?” he pondered, contemplating the potential of AI as a tool for empowerment rather than fear.

Curtis Helser, their manager, similarly recognized AI’s dual potential. Introduced to ChatGPT by his wife, he uses it to refine work emails, seeing it as an invaluable assistant rather than a threat to his job. “You have to be in the building…Kissing babies, shaking hands,” he remarked, humorously affirming the irreplaceable human connection in his role.

A Contrasting Realization

At that moment, I found myself reflecting deeply on the contrasting perspectives I encountered. While many at the NABJ convention viewed AI as an enemy, the team at Betts illustrated how technology could be leveraged as a useful ally. The younger generation had embraced AI, while the older members remained cautiously optimistic, leveraging it at their own pace to enhance their work and lives.

This dichotomy mirrors historical patterns; the early fears surrounding personal computers were reminiscent of the current anxieties surrounding AI. Perhaps those of us creating and controlling information see AI as a threat to our existence, while those in service-oriented roles view it as a way to enhance their work efficiency and effectiveness.

Conclusion

The real AI revolution, I realized, is not captured solely in chat rooms or headlines; it unfolds in everyday conversations and practical problem-solving scenarios. As we navigate this unprecedented technological landscape, the discourse around AI will continue to evolve. Embracing an open-minded approach—where we view AI as a tool rather than an adversary—will likely prove invaluable for journalistic integrity, community engagement, and individual empowerment in the years to come.
