Study Shows AI Chatbots in Health Services are Perpetuating Racism

Study Reveals Bias and Misconceptions in AI-Powered Chatbots in Healthcare

The potential of AI in medicine is immense, but a recent study has shed light on the dangers of relying on chatbots for medical information, particularly when it comes to issues of race and ethnicity. The study, published in Digital Medicine, tested various AI models trained on internet text and found that they frequently provided misinformation and reinforced harmful stereotypes about Black patients.

The chatbots tested, including ChatGPT, GPT-4, Google’s Bard, and Anthropic’s Claude, were unable to accurately answer questions about medical topics like kidney function, lung capacity, and skin thickness when it came to differences between Black and white patients. Some responses even included fabricated, race-based equations that perpetuated false beliefs about biological differences between different racial groups.

The consequences of these inaccuracies are significant. Medical providers have historically rated Black patients’ pain lower, misdiagnosed health concerns, and recommended less relief, all based on outdated and harmful beliefs about race and health. As more physicians turn to chatbots for assistance in their daily tasks, there is a real concern that these systems could perpetuate and amplify forms of medical racism.

While some may question the utility of testing chatbots in this way, the reality is that medical professionals are increasingly turning to commercial language models for assistance in their work. Even patients themselves are seeking help from chatbots to diagnose their symptoms, highlighting the need for these systems to provide accurate and unbiased information.

The study’s co-lead researcher, Tofunmi Omiye, emphasized the importance of uncovering these limitations early on to ensure that AI is deployed properly in medicine. Both OpenAI and Google, the creators of some of the tested models, have stated their commitment to reducing bias and reminding users that chatbots are not a substitute for medical professionals.

As the use of AI in healthcare continues to grow, it is crucial to prioritize ethical implementation and rigorous testing of these systems. The potential for AI to augment human decision-making in clinical settings is significant, but only if these tools are fair, equitable, and safe for all patients.

In the end, the goal should be to close the gaps in healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes, rather than perpetuating harmful stereotypes and biases. By addressing the limitations and biases of current AI models, we can move towards a future where technology truly enhances the quality of care for all patients, regardless of race or ethnicity.
