Royton and Crompton Academy students emerge victorious in robotics challenge at Oldham News

“STEM Experience for Year 8 Students at E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy”

STEM education provides students with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world. Recently, Year 8 students from E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy had the opportunity to participate in a robotics experience at the University of Manchester, organized by the Manchester United Foundation.

The students engaged in a series of challenges that required problem-solving skills and creativity. In the morning, they worked on creating an obstacle course using tape, straws, and bits of cardboard to build bridges, slopes, and tunnels. This hands-on activity not only tested their engineering skills but also fostered teamwork and collaboration.

In the afternoon, the students learned about the structural integrity of buildings and were tasked with creating overhead lines using simple materials like straws, tape, and string. These activities allowed the students to apply their knowledge of STEM concepts in a practical and engaging way.

The Manchester United Foundation aims to inspire and empower young people through sports and education. By providing opportunities like this robotics experience, they are helping students explore their interests in STEM fields and develop new skills.

E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy’s Headteacher, Andrea Atkinson, expressed her gratitude for the STEM event, highlighting its importance in exposing students to top university experiences and sparking their interest in STEM subjects.

Events like these not only encourage students to pursue careers in STEM but also demonstrate the value of hands-on learning experiences. By engaging students in real-world challenges, they can develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities that will benefit them in their academic and professional lives.

Overall, the robotics experience at the University of Manchester was a success, showcasing the importance of STEM education in shaping the future of young minds. It is through initiatives like this that we can inspire the next generation of innovators, creators, and problem solvers.
