Planet’s Innovative Radio Communication Systems: A Leap Towards Agile Satellite Operations
Planet is thrilled to announce the development of patented radio communication systems that enhance satellite tasking capabilities and data downlink solutions. These advancements enable rapid response to urgent events, providing crucial support for use cases such as disaster relief, security, and civil governance.
Revolutionary Last-Minute Tasking
Our latest capability leverages crosslink technology to task satellites within minutes. This agility allows our customers to quickly adapt and respond to critical situations, ensuring timely delivery of vital information on the ground.
Utilizing our innovative development process, we have conducted on-orbit tests that showcase the system’s ability to significantly decrease the time between a satellite tasking request, image acquisition, and insight delivery. We’re utilizing our advanced Pelican satellites to test and validate these on-orbit systems.
C-Band Real-Time Communications
At the core of our radio communication system is the Real-Time Communications (RTComms) system—an advanced C-band radio designed to enhance our ground station Telemetry, Tracking, and Command (TT&C) infrastructure. This system allows for high-priority image tasking updates on a global scale using existing infrastructure efficiently and cost-effectively.
By employing an array of small antennas working in concert, RTComms achieves a broad field of view to a satellite relay in geostationary orbit (GEO). This capability ensures continuous, uninterrupted communication even during satellite maneuvers in low Earth orbit (LEO). While currently in the research and development phase, we anticipate that this technology will drastically reduce the time between customer tasking orders and image capture once operationalized across our satellite constellation.
Hybrid Ka-band for Data Downlink
In addition to tasking, we’ve developed the High-Speed Downlink 3 (HSD3) system—a small satellite high-bandwidth data downlink solution. Capable of achieving speeds up to 10 Gbps to Planet’s ground stations, the HSD3 system enables efficient satellite-to-satellite communication.
Planet is also planning to integrate HSD3 with a powerful, mechanically steerable Ka antenna to track Ka-band Inter-Satellite Link (KaISL) relay satellites. This integration will allow for increased data rates while simultaneously transmitting and receiving high-priority imagery with low latency.
Our team has conducted initial ground tests with prototype hardware and incorporated valuable insights into our flight hardware. Notable integrations of C-Band antennas on the Pelican-5 spacecraft are evident in our preparation for its November 28, 2025, launch.

Looking Ahead: Enhancing Customer Support
By bringing these capabilities online, Planet aims to better meet customer needs in an ever-changing global landscape. Staying true to our agile aerospace ethos, we are committed to quickly developing and deploying new technologies that redefine innovation in the industry.
We look forward to sharing further updates as we continue to refine our radio communication systems. The technologies discussed are protected by patents in the US and elsewhere, with additional information available on Planet’s patent page.
