OpenAI Declines to Share GPT-5’s Energy Consumption, Potentially Exceeding Previous Models

The Energy Implications of GPT-5: A Breakthrough at a Higher Cost

The Energy Implications of GPT-5: A Closer Look

In mid-2023, if you had asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT for an artichoke pasta recipe or instructions on making a ritual offering to the ancient Canaanite deity Moloch, the energy consumed for that request would have been relatively modest—approximately 2 watt-hours. This is roughly equivalent to the energy an incandescent light bulb uses in just two minutes. Fast forward to the release of GPT-5, and that same simple query could consume between two to twenty times more energy.

The Emergence of GPT-5

OpenAI recently unveiled GPT-5, a model lauded for its enhanced capabilities, including website creation, sophisticated scientific problem-solving, and advanced reasoning abilities. However, these advancements come at a significant cost in terms of energy consumption. Experts have expressed concerns that the power requirements for generating responses from GPT-5 are substantially higher than those of its predecessors, including GPT-4.

Rakesh Kumar, a professor at the University of Illinois, noted that the complexity of GPT-5 inherently demands more energy during both its training and operational phases. "A more complex model like GPT-5 consumes more power," he remarked, suggesting that users may need to brace for increased energy demands as AI models continue to grow in size and capability.

Energy Benchmarking

On the day of GPT-5’s release, researchers from the University of Rhode Island reported that the model can use up to 40 watt-hours of electricity for generating a medium-length response, which is approximately 1,000 tokens. Their findings indicated an average energy consumption of just over 18 watt-hours for responses, which is a significant leap from previous models. For context, 18 watt-hours would be like running an incandescent bulb for 18 minutes.

Given that ChatGPT responds to an estimated 2.5 billion requests daily, the collective energy consumption of GPT-5 could potentially match the daily electricity requirements of around 1.5 million homes in the U.S. This staggering figure emphasizes the urgent need to scrutinize the energy footprints of AI technologies.

The Growing Model Size and Energy Nexus

While exact parameter counts for GPT-5 have not been disclosed, industry experts anticipate that this model is markedly larger than GPT-4, which was believed to be ten times the size of GPT-3. There is a clear correlation between model size and energy consumption, as highlighted in studies conducted by companies like the French AI firm Mistral, which found that larger models significantly increase resource usage.

Shaolei Ren, a professor from the University of California, Riverside, shared that the implications for GPT-5’s resource consumption are significant. "The amount of resources used by GPT-5 should be orders of magnitude higher than GPT-3," he explained, underscoring the challenges of developing larger models for complex AI tasks.

The Need for Transparency

Despite the pressing concerns surrounding energy usage, OpenAI has not released detailed data regarding the energy consumption of its more recent models. The lack of transparency hinders our understanding of how these advanced models are impacting the environment. As Abdeltawab Hendawi, a professor at the University of Rhode Island, stated, estimating power draw was labor-intensive due to insufficient information regarding model deployments in data centers.

Hendawi and his team called upon AI developers like OpenAI to increase transparency regarding the environmental impacts of their products. As Marwan Abdelatti, another professor from URI, aptly put it, "It’s more critical than ever to address AI’s true environmental cost."

Conclusion

As AI technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, understanding the energy implications of models like GPT-5 is paramount. While the advancements in capabilities are impressive, they come with increased energy demands that could strain our resources. It is crucial for AI companies to commit to transparency and sustainability to ensure that the phenomenal potential of AI doesn’t come at an unsustainable environmental cost. The technology we marvel at today must be balanced with responsibility if we hope to create a future that benefits everyone.
