M-A Robotics Presents a Spectacular Pirate-Themed Mechanical M-Ayhem Event!

Mechanical M-Ayhem: A Thrilling Showcase of Innovation and Team Spirit at M-A’s Annual Robotics Competition

The Thrilling Showdown at Mechanical M-Ayhem 2023

This past Saturday, the spirited atmosphere of Ayers Gym was alive with the buzz of excitement as Team 766 hosted its annual Mechanical M-Ayhem robotics competition. With the high-seas pirate theme setting the stage, teams of enthusiastic rookies showcased their innovation and hard work after months of preparation. It was a day filled with challenges, camaraderie, and the thrill of competition!

A Platform for Rookies to Shine

Mechanical M-Ayhem serves as a fantastic opportunity for rookie teams to gain invaluable experience in the world of robotics. Over three months, these budding engineers revised and revamped their creations, all eager to put them to the test. Senior veteran Kapil Ayyar remarked, “It’s been a pretty long process, but they’ve come out better or worse.” This statement perfectly encapsulated the rollercoaster journey the teams undertook in anticipation of the competition.

The event is not just about competition; it acts as a recruitment tool for the robotics team, allowing them to attract new members and fuel the next generation of robotics enthusiasts.

All Hands on Deck

The success of Mechanical M-Ayhem wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of veteran members who put in countless hours of preparation. From Friday night until the morning of the competition, they planned every detail, ensuring everything was set for a smooth event. They coordinated food and drinks for participants and rallied a team of volunteers to help with managing logistics and cleaning after each match—truly a testament to teamwork!

The Competitors Assemble

As friends and family filled the stands, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. Teams hurriedly prepared their robots, undergoing crucial inspections to check for any hazardous parts or software issues. With the clock ticking down to the start time, many teams scrambled to make last-minute adjustments, showcasing the high-pressure environment that often accompanies robotics competitions.

Phases of Competition

Mechanical M-Ayhem featured three distinct phases:

  1. Autonomy Phase: Robots autonomously operated through prewritten code, earning points based on successful execution.

  2. Teleop Phase: Drivers took control, manually driving their robots to score points by shooting balls into two central goals.

  3. Endgame: Teams aimed for high-stakes points by shooting balls into a small hoop named the "kraken," with successful shots earning a staggering ten points each.

The competition kicked off at 9:00 a.m., with teams divided into alliances—red and blue—engaging in round-robin matches. The initial rounds saw some struggles, including a surprising win for the blue alliance despite technical difficulties, thanks to a misstep from their opponents.

Strategies Evolve

As the competition unfolded, teams began to adapt and deploy new strategies. Woodside High School’s Team 1002 focused on speed for quick scoring, while Quarry Lane High School’s Team 7419 showcased the importance of precision with their carefully calibrated shots. The atmosphere in the gym was electric, with parents and friends cheering passionately, showcasing their school spirit.

The Climactic Finale

After preliminary rounds, teams lined up based on their scores to select alliances for a final showdown. The finals were intense, featuring heated discussions on strategy among players. Team 7419 and Team 1002 went head-to-head against the fierce rivalry of Teams 1001 and 1003. The final moments had spectators on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the result as both teams showcased their skills.

Ultimately, Team 7419 and Team 1002 triumphed with a narrow victory of 129-122, and their celebration highlighted the culmination of their hard work.

A Learning Experience

Reflecting on the day, freshman rookie Dylan Fong summed up the experience well: “It’s been a really fun experience. We haven’t been winning a lot, but we have been learning a lot.” Even though none of the M-A teams clinched the overall victory, the learning aspects of the competition were deemed incredibly valuable.

A Bright Future Ahead

Mechanical M-Ayhem serves as a beacon for aspiring robotics enthusiasts, promising them that the journey in robotics is as rewarding as it is challenging. Mentor Justin Parks captured the essence perfectly: “You have to tell them, ‘Hey, you’re going to spend two to three months working on something. And we promise this thing at the end will be cool.’”

With the spirit, energy, and camaraderie on display, all participants left Ayers Gym with newfound experiences and a shared excitement for the future of robotics. Here’s to many more years of creativity and competition in the world of robotics!
