Wearable Robotics Secures €5 Million Series A Round for Global Expansion
Pisa-Based Startup Paves the Way for Neuromotor Rehabilitation
Wearable Robotics, a pioneering startup based in Pisa, has successfully closed a €5 million Series A funding round, aimed at accelerating its global expansion and enhancing its innovative technologies within the neuromotor rehabilitation sector. The investment, led by CDP Venture Capital’s Accelerators Fund, marks a significant milestone for the company, further solidifying its position in an ever-evolving industry.
A Diverse Investment Base
The funding round witnessed contributions from several key players, including MITO Technology through its Tech Transfer fund, LIFTT, and SIMEST, which utilized resources from the F.394/81 – Venture Capital and Participatory Investments Section. Additionally, prominent institutions like RoboIT and the co-investment fund Toscana Next, managed by CDP Venture Capital and backed by major banking foundations in Tuscany, played crucial roles in this investment.
Vision and Goals
Lucia Lencioni, CEO of Wearable Robotics, expressed the significance of this funding: “The closing of this round represents a crucial step in our evolution. We are building the foundation for sustainable and scalable growth while investing in product innovation, regulatory strength, and commercial development. Our goal is to bring increasingly advanced and modular wearable robotics solutions capable of generating a concrete impact along the entire rehabilitation continuum.”
Since its founding in 2014 as a spin-off from the prestigious Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Wearable Robotics has specialized in creating robotic devices and exoskeletons designed for rehabilitation, movement assistance, and augmenting human capabilities.
Innovative Solutions for Rehabilitation
The company’s expertise lies in the development of high-efficiency wearable robots intended for a variety of applications, including load handling, walking assistance, and motor function recovery. Its rehabilitation solutions uniquely integrate wearable robotics with augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) systems, enriching the rehabilitation pathway and optimizing the recovery of neuromotor functions, particularly for daily living activities.
Wearable Robotics encompasses two main divisions:
- NEXUM Medical: Focused on advancing robotic technology for neuro-motor rehabilitation, NEXUM Medical designs and manufactures robotic devices for the upper limbs, utilizing VR-integrated robotic systems—both active and passive.
- NEXUM Industry: This arm develops exoskeletons aimed at assisting with manual load handling, effectively reducing worker fatigue and the risk of occupational musculoskeletal diseases.
Expanding Horizons
With the capital raised, Wearable Robotics plans to significantly expand its product portfolio and enhance its competitive position in key international markets. Currently, the startup’s leading product, the ALEX RS—a bilateral device for neuromotor rehabilitation of the upper limb—has earned distinction as a benchmark in rehabilitation robotics, with over 50 units installed worldwide.
Moreover, the company aims to streamline regulatory processes to improve its market readiness, strengthen compliance measures, and accelerate the time-to-market for its technologies. This strategy encompasses bolstering commercial channels both locally and globally, targeting North American markets for expansion, and forging new partnerships to broaden its distribution network.
A Promising Future
With an established presence in 20 countries and a portfolio of eight patents covering its proprietary technology, Wearable Robotics stands at the forefront of the rehabilitation robotics field. The recent funding round not only propels its ambitious growth plans but also reaffirms the significant potential of wearable robotics in transforming rehabilitation practices worldwide.
As the demand for effective rehabilitation solutions continues to grow, Wearable Robotics is well-positioned to lead the way, pioneering innovations that will enhance the quality of life for countless individuals in need of neuromotor rehabilitation.
