Aiming to inject almost £5 million into a project designed to increase the site’s residential capacity, EEH seemingly overlooked the immediate and crucial needs of the existing community.

By 2022, the fragile reality of this redevelopment began to unravel. After inclement weather coupled with construction-induced damage, residents found themselves confronting an unprecedented deluge—rainwater began flooding into their homes. Donkin, among several others, was displaced, enduring a turbulent search for adequate accommodation amidst ongoing repairs.

Living with Mold and Mismanagement

The ramifications of this situation are profound. Reports have surfaced of rampant mold growth, damp conditions, and substandard living spaces, with residents reporting respiratory issues exacerbated by their environment. Those who have remained in their homes, like Sally Goodwin, have found their conditions not only unlivable but detrimental to their health. "I am using an inhaler for the first time in nearly 30 years,” she states, a testament to the ongoing toll taken by the neglect of EEH.

Eleanor Solomon, a partner at Anthony Gold, emphasizes the overarching responsibility of East End Homes as the freeholder. The situation is dire: for many, living conditions have been unbearable for nearly two years as ongoing construction has disrupted lives and left them feeling powerless.

As this distressing saga unfolds, residents are urging city officials, including Mayor Sadiq Khan, to intervene.
