Horizon Robotics: Pioneering a New Ecosystem for Intelligent Driving

Edited by Li Qin

In a bold move to redefine the landscape of intelligent driving, Yu Kai, CEO of Horizon Robotics, recently outlined the company’s vision at their inaugural ecosystem conference. Highlighting the still-nascent state of intelligent driving accessibility, he underscored the need for innovative strategies to expand market reach.

Analyzing the Current Market

Yu Kai posed an intriguing observation: intelligent driving has yet to penetrate the mass market effectively. In the first three quarters of this year, vehicles priced over 200,000 yuan captured 30% of the market, while those below 130,000 yuan made up a whopping 50%. Alarmingly, many cars in the lower-priced category lack urban assisted driving functionalities, underscoring a significant gap in the accessible deployment of intelligent driving solutions.

Horizon Robotics has risen to this challenge with its intelligent driving solution, HSD. Remarkably, this system has already been integrated into models priced at 130,000 yuan and aims to extend its capabilities to vehicles starting at 70,000 yuan next year.

The HSD Together Model

To address accessibility, Horizon Robotics has pivoted its business model from merely selling chips to offering comprehensive algorithm-based services under the HSD Together model. Historically, the company focused on providing chips and solutions that included everything from toolchains to algorithm IP licensing. However, recognizing the limitations of this approach, they now offer a framework that emphasizes algorithms and capabilities, positioning themselves as not just a supplier but as a partner in advanced driving technologies.

Collaborations with firms like Denso and CARIZON reveal a tailored strategy that prioritizes accessibility and innovation. Following their reorganization, HCT (formerly Continental) emerged as a Tier 2 supplier eager to integrate Horizon Robotics’ technology into its own intelligent driving solutions.

A Shared Vision

The convergence of intelligent driving capabilities is akin to the evolution of automatic transmissions. Just as automatic gear systems have become standardized, Yu Kai believes intelligent driving will showcase similar performance tiers. The distinctions will largely stem from brand representation rather than fundamental technological differences.

To aid this evolution, Horizon Robotics is developing the fourth-generation BPU architecture—dubbed Riemann. This architecture boasts a tenfold increase in precision, supports advanced computing tasks, and optimizes energy efficiency, marking a significant leap towards enhancing intelligent driving capabilities.

Reshaping Industry Dynamics

Transitioning from a chip supplier to a driver of collaborative innovation through the HSD Together model represents a significant shift for Horizon Robotics. The aim is clear: to engage Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers in a cooperative environment while simultaneously pushing for the mainstream acceptance of intelligent driving technologies.

However, this new ecosystem introduces its complexities. The relationship between Horizon Robotics and its partners is not just collaborative; it also entails competition. The fluid boundaries mean that how they manage this duality of co-development and rivalry will be critical in determining the success of this model. Striking a balance between collaboration and competition will be integral in ushering intelligent driving into the hands of everyday consumers.

Conclusion

Horizon Robotics is actively shaping a new ecosystem aimed at making intelligent driving more accessible and integrated into everyday cars. As they navigate the fine lines of partnership and competition, the road ahead will not only define their future but potentially revolutionize the intelligent driving landscape. The successful realization of this vision could very well herald a new era for mass-market autonomous vehicles.
