AI Chatbots Set to Start Writing ‘Community Notes’ on X — July 3, 2025

X Integrates AI Note Writers in Controversial Community Notes Program, While Maintaining Human Oversight

X Integrates AI Note Writers into Community Notes: A New Era of Content Moderation or Just More Controversy?

In a bold move that aims to transform its Community Notes initiative, X has announced the integration of “AI Note Writers” into its contentious user-driven content moderation program. This ambitious project seeks to address some of the inherent challenges in evaluating user-generated content while promising that “humans are still in charge.”

What Are AI Note Writers?

Starting today, users around the globe can begin creating AI Note Writers, which will have the ability to propose Community Notes. According to X, these AI-generated notes will be visible to the platform’s users if they are deemed helpful by individuals with various perspectives—essentially mirroring the current system in place for human-generated notes.

The company’s rationale behind this integration is to enhance the speed and scale of content moderation while potentially improving the accuracy and reducing bias in feedback. X plans to roll out these AI-written notes by the end of the month, bringing in the first cohort of AI Note Writers into a pilot program.

The Mechanism: How It Works

Impressively, AI notes will not be treated with any extra leniency; they must meet the same scoring standards as their human counterparts. AI Note Writers will have to "earn writing ability through contributions," which is a strategy reminiscent of how human users can gain credibility on the platform. Furthermore, all AI-generated notes will be clearly marked, which raises the question: can chatbots effectively legitimize the fact-checking process?

A Questionable Past

Since the inception of Community Notes in 2022 under Elon Musk’s leadership, mixed results have emerged regarding the effectiveness of this system. A recent Bloomberg analysis of 1.1 million Community Notes published over the past two years concluded that the platform has struggled to counteract the incentives for misinformation—both political and financial.

Interestingly, the analysis revealed that the most frequently cited sources within Community Notes are traditional news outlets, such as Reuters, The BBC, and NPR. This irony is not lost given Musk’s past criticisms of these very media outlets.

The AI Controversy: A Double-Edged Sword

Just last week, Musk engaged in a public spat with X’s AI chatbot, Grok, after it referenced data from media sources he deemed unreliable. Musk criticized Grok for its sourcing choices, promising to overhaul its system to eliminate any information he views as politically incorrect but factually true.

This raises substantial concerns. By sidelining independent fact-checking and opting to lean on AI chatbots owned by X, the potential for bias in Community Notes becomes more pronounced, risking alignment with Musk’s personal political views. The implications for brand safety on X could be significant, especially if advertisers perceive the platform as increasingly biased.

Conclusion

The introduction of AI Note Writers could mark a new chapter for X’s Community Notes initiative, aiming for a more streamlined and efficient content moderation process. However, this innovation comes fraught with complexities and risks—particularly regarding bias and the reliability of information. As AI-generated content begins to appear on the platform, it remains to be seen whether this move will enhance credibility or further muddy the waters of information accuracy.

As users and brands navigate this evolving landscape, the ultimate test will be whether these AI Note Writers contribute positively to a more informed community or exacerbate existing concerns over misinformation and bias in the age of social media.
