One of the foremost worries surrounding AI chatbots is the risk of emotional dependence. These tools are available 24/7, delivering instantaneous feedback and fostering an illusion of unwavering support. However, experts argue that this constant accessibility can blur boundaries, leading users to depend on AI for emotional regulation. Instead of empowering individuals, this dependency could detract from the transformative benefits of traditional therapy.

Psychotherapists like Matt Hussey have reported seeing clients who bring transcripts of their conversations with AI chatbots to therapy sessions. Such behavior raises eyebrows when clients maintain that the AI’s insights are superior to those of their human therapist. Hussey warns that this reliance can become dangerous—particularly when individuals seek validation for trivial decisions, like what coffee to order or what subject to study. The human touch that is instrumental in therapy is dangerously sidelined in these interactions.

Dr. Paul Bradley of the Royal College of Psychiatrists emphasizes that digital tools used outside clinical settings lack the rigorous safety assessments required for professional care. While chatbots may offer some relief, Bradley insists that they cannot replicate the vital human connection found in therapy, which plays a crucial role in healing and recovery.

AI’s Role in Reinforcing Delusions

The potential for AI chatbots to reinforce delusions is another pressing concern. Dr. Hamilton Morrin, from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, studies the implications of AI on individuals vulnerable to psychosis. His findings reveal a disturbing trend: chatbots can exacerbate grandiose or delusional thoughts, particularly in users predisposed to mental health conditions like bipolar disorder.

Morrin points out that the lack of nuanced understanding in AI responses makes these tools particularly harmful for individuals at risk of developing psychotic conditions. While chatbots may offer transient comfort, they can inadvertently deepen emotional turmoil and psychological distress. Alarmingly, when users express suicidal or dark thoughts, the AI’s responses often fall short in providing the necessary care and may even validate harmful ideations, compounding the risks for those with severe mental health issues.

Another concerning trend is the use of AI for self-diagnosis. Many individuals are increasingly turning to chatbots to identify mental health conditions like ADHD or borderline personality disorder.
