In a groundbreaking move, France-based nuclear startup Naarea (Nuclear Abundant Affordable Resourceful Energy for All) has forged a strategic partnership with Fluid Wire Robotics (FWR). This alliance aims to enhance robotic handling capabilities for Naarea’s innovative fuel production facility and its XAMR microreactors, particularly during maintenance and dismantling operations.

A Vision for Advanced Nuclear Solutions

Founded in 2020 by Jean-Luc Alexandre and Ivan Gavriloff, Naarea is making significant strides in the development of the XAMR (eXtrasmall Advanced Modular Reactor)—a compact molten salt fast neutron micro-reactor with a capacity of 40 MWe or 80 MWt. This cutting-edge design not only generates electricity but also repurposes long-lived used fuel waste from conventional reactors into a resourceful energy source.

The XAMR microreactor, intended for deployment near electro-intensive industrial sites, will remain in Naarea’s ownership to uphold safety, security, and maintenance standards. However, the nature of these systems means that maintenance and dismantling will be complex, often involving operations under challenging conditions, including high temperatures and exposure to radiation.

Fluid Wire Robotics, a pioneering startup spun off from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, is at the forefront of robotic technology specifically designed for extreme and unstructured environments. Founded in 2024 by a team of innovators, including Marco Bolignari and Francesco Damiani, FWR focuses on enabling remote and unmanned inspection, maintenance, and repair operations.

One of FWR’s crowning achievements is its proprietary Fluid Wire technology, which separates actuation and electronics into a remote Actuation Box. This innovative approach allows for the creation of fully electric robotic manipulators that can operate effectively in environments fraught with challenges such as radiation, vacuum, underwater conditions, or extreme temperatures.

  • Six Degrees of Freedom: This allows teams to implement robotic arms without integrated electronics within a nuclear zone, keeping motors and sensors in a remote shieldable unit.
