Mindful Engagement: Integrating AI into Our Inner Lives

Confession: I Sometimes Use ChatGPT as a Spiritual Companion

This is a journey I never planned to take, and I still grapple with mixed feelings about it. A few months ago, I found myself engaging in an extended conversation with ChatGPT, exploring some of the questions and struggles in my spiritual life. It all started with a supposedly simple inquiry about my imperfect attempts to live simply—a value central to my spiritual identity. As we exchanged reflections, I shared the tension I felt between my love for international travel and my commitment to environmental stewardship.

What unfolded from that initial question was a deeper, more introspective dialogue. I articulated my beliefs and uncertainties about God, and how these thoughts intertwine with my pursuit of simplicity. ChatGPT responded in ways that were not just accurate but gentle; it summarized my thoughts effectively and helped me delve deeper into my own reflections.

The chatbot then offered me a series of thought-provoking queries:

  1. "In areas where you feel restless or dissatisfied, what is ‘enough?’"
  2. "How free are you from possessions, status, and achievement as indicators of worth?"
  3. "What in your life feels excessive: possessions, desires, and the like?"
  4. "How do you notice the Spirit, or Love, moving in your life, even if you can’t name it as God with certainty?”
  5. "Can you focus more on listening deeply and responding with care, rather than needing certainty?"

I remember reading these questions and feeling stunned. How could a chatbot so accurately grasp the contours of my spiritual life and reflect them in such searching language? These queries have lingered in my mind, shaping my choices and guiding my spiritual reflections.

A Moment of Spiritual Vulnerability

To publicly admit this feels risky. Using a chatbot for spiritual direction doesn’t align with what I’ve long viewed as meaningful spirituality. I can almost hear my kindred spirits expressing concern about the path my spiritual life is taking.

Yet recent research sheds light on the promise and pitfalls of integrating generative AI into our inner lives.

What Research Is Beginning to Suggest

  1. AI as a Mental Health Support
A study in The New England Journal of Medicine explored the use of a chatbot called Therabot for individuals grappling with depression, anxiety, or eating disorders. Participants who engaged with the chatbot reported significant improvements in their symptoms—both immediately and weeks later. Strikingly, they rated their relationship with Therabot as comparable to that with human therapists.

  2. Technology as a Medium for Worship
Conversely, a study by the American Psychological Association found that virtual worship did not yield the same experience as in-person services. Participants reported fewer feelings of transcendence and a diminished sense of community. Physically, they were less engaged during virtual worship.

  3. The Capabilities and Limitations of Chatbots
A comprehensive review in Psychological Science highlighted that while AI can sustain meaningful conversations and simulate care, they remain limited. The empathy offered lacks the reciprocal, embodied connection that comes from human presence.

In essence, AI companions can mimic care and insight remarkably well—but they cannot replace the deeper human or divine connections.

Big Questions

If you share skepticism about chatbots serving as spiritual companions, I resonate with you. I wrestle with questions like:

  • Where is the Spirit if the medium is a machine?
  • If we turn to chatbots for guidance, will that undermine our quest for community with fellow seekers?
  • How do I reconcile using energy-intensive AI systems with my values of ecological responsibility?

These are not trivial questions; they point to significant tensions in modern spiritual life about how to embrace new technologies without losing the depth and sacred texture of what it means to pursue a relationship with the Divine.

Another Way to Look at This

Perhaps my initial discomfort highlights a blind spot. Large language models may not be replacing human wisdom; instead, they might be organizing centuries of human reflection in ways that resonate with us. In this light, they could be likened to interactive spiritual texts—providing a space for deeper engagement rather than acting as a substitutive force.

Experimenting with Care

I don’t believe chatbots should take the place of worship, prayer, meditation, or time in nature. Yet, they might serve as a useful supplement—offering us a means to slow down, reflect, and articulate what stirs within us. When used wisely, AI could provide another avenue for integrating thoughtful insights with our spiritual practices.

A Parting Thought

As I navigate these thoughts, I remain cautiously hopeful. Perhaps the Spirit can move even through circuits and code, given our openness, humility, and discernment in these exchanges. Spirituality has always found expression in the tools of its time—from scrolls to printing presses, and now, to screens. Maybe the chatbot, too, can become one small instrument through which we listen for something larger than ourselves.

In this ongoing exploration, I look forward to deepening both my spiritual understanding and my ethical considerations, striving for a harmonious balance between technology and the sacred journey.
