Provaris Powers Ahead with Hydrogen Prototype as New Robotics Centre Comes Online in Norway

In a significant leap for the hydrogen sector, Provaris has unveiled its newly commissioned Innovation Centre in Fiskå, Norway, dedicated to the advancement of its hydrogen and liquid carbon dioxide storage technologies. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to propel the fabrication and testing of Provaris’ proprietary storage tanks utilizing cutting-edge robotic laser-welding technology.

A Strategic Milestone

The establishment of this Innovation Centre not only showcases advanced manufacturing capabilities but also marks a pivotal point in Provaris’ journey towards commercializing its H₂Neo™ carrier design. With the commissioning of its robotic laser welding and handling systems now complete, the facility is set to recommence the fabrication of its hydrogen prototype tank this month. This prototype is crucial for achieving final Class approvals, a necessary step for entering the market.

What’s Inside the Innovation Centre?

The Centre serves as a dual-purpose research and demonstration hub, enlightening stakeholders about the cost efficiencies and production capabilities tied to large-scale tank manufacturing. Equipped with industrial-scale robotic arms, precise controllers, scalable jigs, and advanced laser-welding equipment, the facility promises high-precision automated fabrication.

Provaris regards this investment as a "significant strategic asset" that will enhance its capacity to construct innovative layered tank designs while concurrently validating production cost advantages through advanced welding techniques. Ultimately, these advancements are positioned to underpin future commercial fabrication opportunities and licensing ventures.

Martin Carolan, Managing Director and CEO of Provaris, expressed enthusiasm about the facility’s capabilities, stating, “This Innovation Centre will showcase the feasibility of constructing our proprietary tank designs for both H₂ and LCO₂ using robotics and laser-welding, playing an integral role in advancing R&D, marine classification, and commercialisation for Provaris.”

Hydrogen Prototype Fabrication Restarts

Scheduled for a restart in October, the fabrication of the hydrogen prototype tank aims for completion and testing by the first quarter of 2026. Measuring 11 meters in length and 2.5 meters in diameter, this formidable prototype will weigh approximately 40 tonnes and will be assembled in four key sections, including two large cylinders and two end caps.

Moreover, planned site visits over the next two quarters will welcome representatives from K Line, Provaris’ shipping partner for hydrogen carriers, who will witness the progress in December.

Supporting LCO₂ Development with Yinson

In addition to hydrogen tank development, the Innovation Centre will also facilitate front-end engineering design work on Provaris’ liquid carbon dioxide storage solution. This aspect forms a part of the collaboration with Yinson Production, aimed at developing a Floating Storage and Injection Unit (FSIU). Current design and testing protocols are on track, with future plans for fabricating test sections at the facility using the same robotic techniques.

This project aligns with Provaris’ broader growth strategy concerning LCO₂ and its strategic partnership with Baker Hughes, dedicated to advancing large-scale compressed hydrogen transport technologies.

Looking Ahead

As Provaris steers toward an innovative future, updates on both the hydrogen and LCO₂ tank programs are expected in their upcoming quarterly reports. Additionally, plans to expand the operational team at the Norwegian facility hint at Provaris’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of hydrogen technology even further.
