Space Adventure Cobra — The Awakening: A Nostalgic Action Platformer Reviving an Anime Classic

Nostalgia Meets Gameplay: A Dive into Space Adventure Cobra — The Awakening

In recent years, we’ve seen a resurgence of video games adapting beloved classic shows, from Power Rangers to G.I. Joe. Now, it’s time for a new contender: Space Adventure Cobra — The Awakening, a modern action platformer inspired by the iconic 1983 anime. But why this adaptation after so many years? Regardless of the motivation, the results look awesome, and I couldn’t wait to dive into it.

Revisiting the Classic

Before jumping into the game, I took the time to watch the original Space Cobra series to familiarize myself with the characters and storyline. Upon starting The Awakening, I was immediately impressed by how faithfully it recreates the essence of the show. The game takes players through the first 12 episodes, and even for newcomers, it includes clips from the series to keep everyone on the same page. The main quest revolves around finding The Three Sisters, whose tattoos reveal the location of a hidden treasure, leading players through the Ultimate Weapon arc.

Staying True to the Source Material

The developers did a commendable job ensuring that the gameplay mirrors Cobra’s adventures in the anime. Players utilize Cobra’s Psycho-gun to eliminate foes, engage in melee combat, and wield the Colt Python 77 revolver to breach enemy shields. The blaster features a charge shot capable of taking down multiple targets, while Cobra’s special attack can clear the entire screen once enough yellow orbs are collected.

The controls are quite satisfying, especially with the auto-aim feature enabled. However, some platform-heavy sections can be tricky. The grappling hook can be finicky, often requiring several attempts to launch yourself accurately. Mastering the Guided Shot is essential for targeting weak spots on elusive enemies, making practice a necessity.

A Fair Challenge

The game poses a reasonable challenge, even on normal difficulty, but frequent checkpoints lessen the frustration. Players can expect to die multiple times while honing their skills, yet the satisfaction of progressing past tricky segments is worth the effort. Plus, there’s a two-player co-op mode, which I explored briefly and found to be a delightful way to team up with a friend.

Visual and Auditory Excellence

Visually, Space Adventure Cobra immerses players in the hand-drawn aesthetic reminiscent of early ’80s animation. Notably, Cobra retains his ever-present cigar, a detail that surprised me given today’s sensibilities around smoking. Nevertheless, it pays tribute to the character’s original design. The soundtrack evokes the nostalgic sounds of the era; though it can feel repetitive, it fits the theme perfectly, mirroring the anime’s signature style.

A Treat for Fans and Newcomers Alike

Space Adventure Cobra — The Awakening is a fantastic experience for both die-hard fans of the series and those who enjoy action-adventure platformers. Spanning just the first 12 episodes, I’m left curious about the possibility of a sequel that could continue the narrative, considering the anime ran for 31 episodes in total. This game has introduced me to a fun anime and a lively gaming experience that shouldn’t be missed.

In conclusion, whether you’re a longtime fan of the franchise or simply looking for a new adventure, Space Adventure Cobra is a delightful blend of nostalgia and gameplay that invites players on a thrilling journey. Don’t miss the chance to experience it for yourself!
