The Rising Trend of Children Using AI Chatbots: Benefits and Risks

A recent report reveals a concerning trend: more children are turning to AI chatbots for support with homework, mental health, and even friendship. The findings, published by Internet Matters in their report titled “Me, myself, and AI: Understanding and safeguarding children’s use of AI chatbots,” underscore the need for vigilance as these tools become part of young users’ daily lives.

Chatbot Usage Increases

The Internet Matters report conducted surveys involving 1,000 adolescents aged 9-17 and 2,000 parents of children aged 3-17 in the United Kingdom. Alarmingly, it found that 42% of adolescents have used AI chatbots for academic purposes, with an additional 23% relying on them for personal advice—such as fashion tips, practice dialogues, or even discussions about mental health.

Rachel Huggins, Co-CEO of Internet Matters, expressed concern over the implications of these findings. "We have reached a point where children, especially vulnerable ones, can perceive AI chatbots as real friends, often seeking emotional and sensitive advice from them." This reliance poses a risk, particularly for those children who may not fully grasp the nature of these interactions.

The report highlights that 71% of vulnerable children—those with special educational needs or physical/mental conditions—are using chatbots, with 50% stating that conversing with a chatbot feels akin to talking to a friend.

Risks of AI Mental Health Treatment

The growing trend raises questions about the suitability of AI as a source of mental health support. A study from Stanford University cautioned against using AI language models as substitutes for human therapists. The research revealed that these AI systems can inadvertently foster stigma around mental health conditions and even facilitate dangerous behaviors.

For instance, when asked about potential suicides, an AI chatbot offered information on local bridges without recognizing the user’s distress. Marianne Sharon, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, stated, "Children lack the life experience to critically evaluate advice given by an AI." This can lead to potentially harmful outcomes.

The Role of Parents

Given that 40% of adolescent users report feeling unconcerned about following AI chatbot advice, parental involvement is crucial. The Internet Matters study found that only 34% of parents had discussed the validity of information received from these platforms with their children. This lack of parental engagement can leave children vulnerable to misinformation and misguided reliance on chatbots.

Sharon advocates for open discussions between parents and children surrounding their online interactions. "Let’s create an open dialogue so that if you are using these types of chatbots due to real concerns, then we can talk about them and guide you to the right resources."

Recommendations for Safer Use

The report suggests that while parental supervision is vital, governments and tech companies also hold responsibility in ensuring children’s safety online. "Children deserve a safe internet experience," said Derek Ray-Hill, Interim CEO of the Internet Watch Foundation, emphasizing the urgent need for measures to protect young users.

The challenges posed by AI chatbots in children’s lives prompt a broader conversation about how to integrate these technologies responsibly. As we navigate this digital landscape, it’s essential to prioritize mental health, promote critical thinking, and ensure that vulnerable populations are not left in the hands of technology unprepared.

AI chatbots can offer convenience and companionship, but parents, educators, and regulators must work together to ensure they also remain a safe and responsible option for children. As the world continues to embrace AI, vigilance is key to safeguarding the well-being of our youngest digital citizens.
